Invoice number generator

Pick a prefix, a start number and a format. You get a clean list of invoice numbers that you can copy and use.

What makes a good invoice number

A good invoice number is unique, easy to read, and goes up in order. Sequential numbers make it easy to see whether an invoice is missing, and they give you and your customer a simple way to refer to a bill. Never reuse a number, even for a cancelled invoice.

Adding the year, such as 2026-0042, makes it easy to find invoices at tax time and restarts the count each January. Adding a client code, such as ACME-007, helps if you bill a few clients often.

Tips

Questions

Do invoice numbers have to be sequential?

Not everywhere, but sequential numbers are the easiest to track and are required or expected in some places. Check the rules where you operate.

What if I make a mistake on an invoice?

Issue a credit note or a corrected invoice with a new number, and reference the original. Avoid editing a sent invoice or reusing its number.

Can I start my first invoice at a high number?

Yes. Many freelancers start at 1001 or at the year followed by 001. The number only needs to be unique.
